Crane Riggers and Crew - Frequently Asked Questions

All crane crew members share responsibility for maintaining a safe work environment. A crane operator must ensure safety and efficiency while moving loads. The signal person/dogman must maintain clear visibility of the load and the surrounding area whilst maintaining high levels of positive communication with the operator to ensure the safe movement of all lifts. The rigger is responsible for attaching the load to the crane, selecting the appropriate lifting gear, and ensuring load security. The maintenance crew must ensure the crane’s regular servicing and preventative maintenance by checking the hydraulic system, cables, and other components.

The safety officer with all crew members follow the prescribed safety guidelines. This includes wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and reporting safety concerns to the site supervisor. Before each use, the crane should be thoroughly inspected to ensure all parts are in working order. Brakes, wires, ropes, hooks, and other moving parts must be inspected periodically. The crane’s load limits should never be exceeded.

A crane crew may operate several different types of cranes, mainly including luffing and hammerhead towercranes, mobile cranes, telescopic cranes, crawler cranes, truck-mounted cranes, rough terrain cranes, overhead cranes, loader cranes, floating cranes and railroad cranes.

Proper training in rigging operations is necessary for all crew members covering correct usage of equipment, communication protocols, emergency procedures, and safety regulations. Before the lifting process commences, the weight and balance of the load are accurately calculated to decide the type of rigging gear required and how it should be used.

The operator never exceeds the rated capacity of the rigging equipment or the crane. The crane crew ensures that the sling/chains are properly attached to the load and the crane hook. A specific type of sling/chains are used for the job, avoiding knotting sling twists etc.

The crane crew must ensure regular training for all. Installed equipment should be periodically inspected and certified. Proper load calculation is a prerequisite for the lifting process to start. Comprehendible signals and instructions must be shared by everyone involved in the operation. All crew members should wear appropriate PPE, such as hard hats, safety glasses, high-visibility clothing, and steel-toed boots with whistle and radios so to maintain communication when out of sight of the crane operator or in the case of a technological issue i.e. flat battery on radios. A workable emergency plan must be in place in case of any contingency.

Crane crew operators must conduct an initial walk-around inspection, followed by thorough engine and control checks, covering brakes, clutches, gauges, warning devices, and limit switches. Additionally, operators inspect the wire rope and the hook for cracks and deformations. In the case of mobile crane they must ensure that the outriggers fully extend and retract without difficulty and should not show signs of damage or extreme wear. Projects often require a tailored approach, and operators must perform pre-operational checks as per requirements

Yes, all BSL crane operators have obtained their high risk work tickets and crane operating certificate. Through rigorous training and skill-enhancement workshops, BSL crane operators boast industry-leading expertise in enhancing efficiency, saving time, and ensuring optimum customer satisfaction.
